Arthritis relief is as close as your bathtub

If you're suffering from the stiff, sore, inflamed joints that make arthritis pain such a misery, this may be news to you: The regular use of Epsom salts in the bath can reduce stiffness and pain caused by arthritis. How does this work?

The magnesium found in Epsom salts reduces inflammation Epsom salt is comprised mostly of magnesium sulfate, which, among many other benefits, is a body enzyme that improves the way the human body uses oxygen. We already know it reduces inflammation and relieve muscle cramps and pain; that's why holistic practitioners and boot camp drill sergeants alike recommend taking an Epsom salt bath to prevent next-day soreness after an intense massage or gruelling workout.

RA is a disease of inflammation

Sore, inflamed joints

Rheumatoid arthritis pain indicates that the membranes surrounding your joints are being attacked by your immune system, which results in inflammation. This inflammation not only causes pain, it eventually thickens the membranes and even destroys the cartilage and bones within the affected joints. Since the inflammation also leads to the weakening of supporting ligaments and tendons, it's the inflammation that has to be stopped. Enter Epsom salts.

Epsom salts relieve swelling and pain

When added to warm bath water, Epsom salts can ease pain and stiffness by reducing inflammation and promoting circulation (the hot water helps with that part). Additionally, soaking in Epsom salt is the most effective, not to mention fun, way to give your body the magnesium your body needs to function properly.

How to use Epsom salts for arthritis relief

There's a simple way to give your body the soothing, anti-inflammatory magnesium it needs to combat the stiffness and pain of RA: simply try soaking 3x weekly in an all-Epsom-salt formula. You can find Epsom salts in a big jug at stores like Shoppers Drug Mart, or in bulk at the Bulk Barn and health food stores. You can also use bath salts that are high in magnesium, like our newest bathing salts, Everybody Hurts.

Unlike our other bath salts which contain sea salts as well, this jar is specifically formulated with essential oils that fight inflammation and cool tense, sore muscles, like wintergreen, camphor and fir needle. These same oils, as well as the Epsom salts themselves, provide arthritis relief for the same inflammation-reducing reasons. And a warm bath provides a wonderful feeling of self-care when we are in pain!
